Paper Recycling

At Parry & Evans, we provide a thorough, effective and environmentally friendly waste paper collection and recycling service tailored to your business’s specific needs.

Whether you are a small business that needs a monthly wheelie bin collection or a large organisation with waste paper baling capability needing a weekly collection – we create a waste paper management plan bespoke to you.

Every month, our fleet of over 800 containers and 30 vehicles collects and delivers upwards of 25 tonnes of mixed paper waste to our specialist recycling facilities.

Here it is comprehensively sorted into waste paper grades, before shredding, baling and delivery to a local paper mill to be recycled into new high-quality paper products.

Types of Commercial Paper We Recycle

Almost all of the paper products we use daily in business are highly recyclable. This includes various types of office paper, packaging materials, and speciality papers used across all industries.

At Parry & Evans, we work directly with your team to identify the types of paper waste your business generates and how best to manage it. We start by looking for opportunities to reduce your paper usage to prevent paper waste from the source; before optimising your recycling processes to create a bespoke commercial paper recycling plan that fits your unique requirements.

Paper Recycling Process

What happens to waste paper when it is sent for recycling? At Parry & Evans, we are proud of our specialist recycling facilities and always happy to show off with 100% transparency about how we handle all the mixed paper waste we receive.

STAGE 01: Collection or Delivery

Following your bespoke commercial paper recycling plan, we either collect your mixed paper from your site in our designated waste paper containers or take delivery from you. The frequency of collections or delivery is completely dependent on your requirements and is calculated between you and our dedicated paper recycling team.

STAGE 02: Sorting of Paper by Grades

Upon arriving at our recycling facility, the mixed papers are collected and brought into the depot in loose or baled forms and inspected by quality control before being placed into relevant sorting bays. To make this process more efficient, our waste paper is sorted using optical and manual sorting systems.

STAGE 03: Baling of Waste Paper

The graded paper is then compressed by our advanced bailing machinery, which compacts the waste paper into mill-sized bales. These bales (up to 44 at a time) are then loaded onto a curtain sider and delivered to a local paper mill.

STAGE 04: Pulping and Purifying

The paper mill then mixes the graded bales with water, breaking down the paper into tiny strands of cellulose fibres, the organic material from plants. During this process, the paper transforms into a thick mixture that is commonly known as pulp. The pulp is then filtered to eliminate contaminants such as small plastic particles or glue.

STAGE 05: Drying Pulp to Create Sheets

To drain and dry out the pulp it is poured onto a flat wire screen. During the drying process, the fibres slowly bond together creating a watery paper sheet.

To accelerate this process and to remove the remaining water, the paper sheets pass through several heavy rollers. The first rollers squeeze out the remaining water before heated cylinders use warm air to dry the paper, and a final roller irons the sheet.

STAGE 06: Rolling of Recycled Paper

Once fully dried, the paper is now fully recycled and ready for use. To make managing the paper sheets easier for storage and transportation they are rolled into the desired size requested by the recycled paper products manufacturer.

Make Money From Commercial Waste Paper

Did you know that we may be able to pay you for your mixed waste paper? The amount of money that we offer in return for your paper waste is dependent on its quality. In paper recycling, this is known as the grade of the paper, and the higher the grade, the more we can pay for it.

We work to the European Standard EN 643 paper grading standards that include over 50 different waste paper grades.

For simplification, these are grouped more generally as:

Ordinary Grades

Mixed Paper and Board: grey board, corrugated board, unsorted/sorted papers.
News and Magazines: newspapers, magazines, de-inking paper.

Medium Grades

Newspapers: standard/unsold newspapers, printed shavings, office paper.
Office Papers: coloured letters, white books, magazines, carbonless paper.

High Grades

Printer Shavings: lightly coloured, woodfree, with/without glue.
Specialty Papers: woodfree letters, business forms, sulphate board.

Special Grades

Specialty Packaging: mixed packaging, liquid board, wrapper kraft.
Wet-Strength Papers: unprinted/printed woodfree, wet labels.

Kraft Grades

Corrugated Kraft: new/used corrugated board, kraft sacks.
Carrier Kraft: unused kraft, wet-strength paper.

Paper-Packaging Waste Legislation

For UK businesses with a turnover of more than £2 million that produce, use, or sell packaging products, you must register and adhere to the Packaging Waste Regulations.

This includes paper-based packaging, with the regulations requiring businesses to ensure that a percentage of the paper packaging they use or produce is recycled.

At Parry & Evans, our environmental regulations specialists are always on hand to help you to guarantee that you comply with all relevant regulations. We also supply all businesses by providing Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) or Packaging Export Recovery Notes (PERNs).

Paper Recycling FAQs

To avoid contamination that reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of paper recycling, paper and card are the ONLY materials that should be collected in our waste paper containers. Cardboard should NOT be included in your paper recycling and should instead be recycled separately – see our Cardboard Recycling page.

This sorting between paper or card and cardboard is required regardless of whether your paper recycling is being collected in one of our many different paper waste containers and picked up by us, or delivered by you to one of our recycling plants. All paper and card entering should be clean and dry, with any other materials (sellotape, packaging tape, plastic packaging etc.) removed.

To help you create a more sustainable and environmentally friendly workplace, we offer help with the education and training of your staff on the best recycling practices.

Parry & Evans can recycle all of your commercial waste paper, including shredded paper for recycling.

The best part is that all of your shredded paper can go in the same container as the rest of your waste paper, saving you the time and effort of splitting recyclables or needing extra waste paper containers on site.

Our speciality is in the collection and recycling of waste paper, including recycling shredded paper. This means that if you shred all of your important or confidential documents on-site, you can still easily recycle this paper in our containers – and mix it with unshredded waste paper.

If you do not have shredding facilities on-site, we work closely with a selection of well-trusted partners to handle the collection, storage, and destruction/recycling of confidential documents.

You can find out more about the different partners we work with and how they help us offer comprehensive recycling and waste treatment solutions on our Total Waste Management (COMING SOON) page.

Our specialist recycling fleet includes over 820 containers and over 30 vehicles that collect an approximate average of 30 tonnes of waste paper every month.

One of our expert team will work with you to help create a bespoke waste paper management plan. This includes the best choice of container or containers and a collection schedule that is best for your business. To give you an idea, below are some examples of the different paper recycling collection options that we offer at Parry & Evans:

Small Businesses typically use either standard 240L wheelie bins or 1100L Eurobins, sometimes with a combination of both.

Medium-Sized Businesses typically use several 1100L Eurobins or one of our 20-yard Roll-On-Off Skips.

Large Businesses typically use a combination of the above, with the addition of our 40-yard Roll-On-Off Skips, Compactor Skips or Front-End Loading Containers for on-site waste paper storage and collection.

For businesses with their own waste paper storage solution or bailers, we also have Curtain Slider Trucks with a capacity to collect 44 bales per trip.
