Cardboard Recycling

If your company creates a significant amount of cardboard waste, the Parry & Evans team can create an environmentally friendly waste management service to meet your needs.

With our fleet of over 820 containers and more than 30 vehicles, we efficiently collect, process, and recycle 40 tonnes (approx.) of cardboard every month, ensuring that we offer a consistent and reliable service for businesses of all sizes.

Cardboard enters our depots in both loose and baled forms where it is inspected by our automated and manual quality control systems, before being placed into designated areas for sorting or loading out.

Our specialist equipment then separates residual paper on a reel from the cardboard core, allowing paper and card to be fully recycled.

Finally, we bale any loose cardboard by its quality grade and transport it to a paper mill to begin its transformation into another high-quality recycled cardboard product.

Packaging Producer Legislation for Cardboard

Any businesses within the UK that produce, use, or sell packaging products, with an annual revenue of over £2 million, are required to register and adhere to the Packaging Waste Regulations.

Cardboard Recycling FAQs

Thankfully, the majority of cardboard that we use in our day-to-day lives is now fully recyclable. This means that most of our cardboard can be recycled and reused in new products, contributing to a circular 360 economy.

However, there are still several commonly used items that cannot be recycled due to being lined or combined with other materials such as plastic film, wax, foil or other materials that are difficult to separate or recycle.

A lot is being done to make all new cardboard that we use recyclable. However, there are still some non-recyclable single-use cardboard products manufactured that are widely used – or common uses that can contaminate recyclable cardboard.

Mixed Materials: Some cardboard is still single-use due to being mixed with other materials during manufacturing. These include cardboards that have a layer of plastic film, wax, foil or other materials that are too expensive or difficult to separate in the recycling process.

Food & Grease Stains: Food or residue from food needs to be removed from waste cardboard. This is most commonly an issue with cardboard used in the fast food industry such as pizza boxes. Grease and oil seep into the cardboard fibres, compromising the quality of the material and making it entirely unrecyclable. If placed in a cardboard recycling container, contaminated cardboard can also compromise the quality and recyclability of the surrounding cardboard.

Moisture & Dampness: Wet Cardboard can cause issues in the recycling process by weakening the quality of the fibres and clogging machinery. The added moisture can also increase the weight and complicate the sorting process. That is why we provide waterproof sealed containers to help store your waste cardboard.

Quality of Fibres: Unlike glass, cardboard can not be recycled infinitely. Each time it is recycled, the pulping process breaks down the fibres into shorter strands. This leads to cardboard becoming unrecyclable after 5 to 7 cycles, depending on the recycled products it has been manufactured into.

Yes, all of our commercial waste cardboard partnerships are custom-made to fit the needs of the business we are working with. This allows your business and our friendly team to create a bespoke plan that includes collection or delivery.

We have over 800 containers and over 30 vehicles in our recycling fleet. These can be placed on your site to make storing your waste cardboard simple for you, and collection simple for us.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to store your waste cardboard on-site, you can arrange drop-off times at either our Deeside or Welshpool facilities. If you are looking for a more comprehensive service that helps you manage all of your commercial waste, you can Call A Recycling Expert or explore our Total Waste Management Service (COMING SOON).

The amount of money we can offer for your waste cardboard depends on the quality and ‘grade’ of the cardboard. The higher the grade of cardboard, the more money you can receive for it.

That is why when all of the cardboard we receive for recycling arrives at our facility, our first step is to quality inspect and sort the cardboard by grades – to guarantee that you earn the highest amount possible for your waste.

Yes, all of the waste cardboard and waste paper that we collect (or take delivery of) is sorted using optical and manual sorting systems. This allows us to easily separate cardboard and mixed papers during our initial quality inspection where we sort materials into the relevant grade bays.

You can find out more about how we manage mixed waste paper for recycling by Calling Our Expert Team or by visiting our Paper Recycling page.
